Surgical masks are not designed for use as particulate respirators and do not provide as much respiratory protection as an N95 respirator. Surgical masks provide barrier protection against droplets including large respiratory particles. Most surgical masks do not effectively filter small particles from the air and do not prevent leakage around the edge of the mask when the user inhales.

An N95 respirator

An N95 respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles. Note that the edges of the respirator are designed to form a seal around the nose and mouth. Surgical N95 Respirators are commonly used in healthcare settings and are a subset of N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs), often referred to as N95s.

What’s the difference between N95 & KN95 mask

The Differing Filtration Rates For Respirators, Surgical Masks, and Cloth Masks

Why Nano film

High filtration nano membrane has become a substitution of traditional melt blown cloth acts as a barrier to minute dust and virus. Spider-web structure and multi-layer nano- microporous membrane leads to excellent filtration efficiency ≥95% and the protective effect is more stable and lasting.

While mask made of melt-blown non-woven material mainly rely on electrostatic adsorption to reach filtration efficiency, as the wearing time increases (such as 1 to 2 hours), due to the wearer's breathing and other human activities, the mask becomes damp, its electrostatic adsorption ability weakens, and the filtration efficiency gradually deteriorates.

How important is the fit of the mask?

It is very important that your mask be able to seal completely to your face. Your mask should be well-sized for your face, so no gaps or leaks are detectable around the edge of the mask. If a mask does not seal well to your face, airborne hazards can enter through the gaps in the faceseal. The respirator should not be so large that it is very close to your eyes or impacting your vision.

What is inward leakage testing

In October 2009, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) proposed to add a test for Total Inward Leakage (TIL) to the certification process for half-mask air-purifying particulate respirators. NIOSH believes that adding this component to respirator testing will help ensure that more users will be able to get an adequate fit, and increase the level of protection for users who are not individually fit tested. ISEA believes the proposed rule would not achieve the goal of improving worker protection, would be difficult for employers to implement, and might have the unintended consequence of less workplace fit testing.
