What’s the difference between surgical mask and N95 /KN95 mask

Surgical-mask1

A surgical mask

Surgical masks are not designed for use as particulate respirators and do not provide as much respiratory protection as an N95 respirator. Surgical masks provide barrier protection against droplets including large respiratory particles. Most surgical masks do not effectively filter small particles from the air and do not prevent leakage around the edge of the mask when the user inhales.

An N95 respirator

An N95 respirator is a respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles. Note that the edges of the respirator are designed to form a seal around the nose and mouth. Surgical N95 Respirators are commonly used in healthcare settings and are a subset of N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs), often referred to as N95s.

3S Mask has a built-in nano film filter that has passed all KN95 tests which is equal to N95.

What’s the difference between N95 & KN95 mask

N95-ABC

With such similar sounding names, it can be confusing to understand the difference between N95 and KN95 masks. What are KN95 masks, and are they the same as N95 masks? This handy chart explains the similarities and differences between these two essential pieces of personal protective equipment.

In short, N95 masks are the standard for respirator masks in the United States; KN95 masks are the Chinese standard. According to mask manufacturer 3M, “it is reasonable to consider” China’s KN95s “equivalent” to US N95s. Mask standards for Europe (FFP2), Australia (P2), Korea (KMOEL), and Japan (DS) are also highly similar."

The Differing Filtration Rates For Respirators, Surgical Masks, and Cloth Masks

  • Surgical masks (those omnipresent blue masks seen in hospitals) provide 45-55% filtration of aerosol particles.
  • cloth masks around 25-38% filtration depending on the number of layers and material type.
  • single layer bandanas and handkerchiefs around 3% filtration.
  • KN95 mask /respirators provide ≥95% filtration of aerosol particles.

Why Nano film

High filtration nano membrane has become a substitution of traditional melt blown cloth acts as a barrier to minute dust and virus. Spider-web structure and multi-layer nano- microporous membrane leads to excellent filtration efficiency ≥95% and the protective effect is more stable and lasting.

While mask made of melt-blown non-woven material mainly rely on electrostatic adsorption to reach filtration efficiency, as the wearing time increases (such as 1 to 2 hours), due to the wearer's breathing and other human activities, the mask becomes damp, its electrostatic adsorption ability weakens, and the filtration efficiency gradually deteriorates.

What’s the breathability of KN95 mask

There’s always a balance between breathability and protective effects.
3S mask ‘s breathability is 30% higher than the KN95 standard.

How important is the fit of the mask?

It is very important that your mask be able to seal completely to your face. Your mask should be well-sized for your face, so no gaps or leaks are detectable around the edge of the mask. If a mask does not seal well to your face, airborne hazards can enter through the gaps in the faceseal. The respirator should not be so large that it is very close to your eyes or impacting your vision.

What is SILVADUR™ DUPONT

The polymeric nature, low-dosage profile & formulation of SILVADUR™ make it the choice for antimicrobial finishing treatments.

Antimicrobial textiles can cut off the pathways of bacteria to prevent the propagation of germs on textiles, so as to effectively avoid the contact between pathogens and the human body, and reduce the risk of human pathogens and cross-infection rates.

SILVADUR™ Advanced Microbial Control Winner of the R&D 100 Award and recognized as one of the top 100 most technologically significant products.

What is inward leakage testing

In October 2009, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) proposed to add a test for Total Inward Leakage (TIL) to the certification process for half-mask air-purifying particulate respirators. NIOSH believes that adding this component to respirator testing will help ensure that more users will be able to get an adequate fit, and increase the level of protection for users who are not individually fit tested. ISEA believes the proposed rule would not achieve the goal of improving worker protection, would be difficult for employers to implement, and might have the unintended consequence of less workplace fit testing.

3S mask is the only one cloth mask in the market pass through the inward leakage testing.
